In industries where decisions carry significant cost and risk, clarity matters.
Krux Analytics Inc. was founded to bring that clarity to drilling operations, helping companies better understand and use their data in real time. Since 2016, the Calgary-based company has been doing just that, building tools that turn complex information into actionable insight for the mining sector.
That work has earned recognition close to home. Last year, Krux Analytics was named the Servus Credit Union Small Business of the Year at the Calgary Small Business Awards, highlighting not only the company’s growth, but the impact of its technology across a global client base.
For Chief Technology Officer Darla Bodnarchuk, the moment stood out for a different reason.
“It was very exciting. And especially for us, because we work very globally, it was really fun to get hometown recognition,” she said.
A pivot of knowledge
Krux’s origin story is grounded in firsthand experience. The company’s founders saw a gap in how data was being used on drilling sites and set out to address it.
“Krux was founded in 2016 coming out of experience in oil and gas drilling. All kinds of different data sets weren’t pulled together in a way that let you make good decisions,” Darla explains.
While that initial insight came from oil and gas, the opportunity quickly expanded.
“We pivoted that same knowledge, but into the mining industry,” she says. “And that’s been our focus since.”
Darla’s own path into the business came from a different angle. With a background in engineering and computer science, she has spent her career on the technology side, applying her skills across multiple industries.
“I very much come from the tech side. I’ve worked across a lot of different industries, but always on that software, hardware and technology side,” she says. “For me personally, it’s really exciting to be able to apply those same skills to a different industry and a new problem.”
That ability to translate technical expertise into real-world solutions is what continues to motivate her. “That’s what keeps me excited: using those base technical skills and going out in the world and solving problems.”
What’s next for Krux
This year marked a major step forward for the company. “We were just acquired by IMDEX as of April 1st. That would be our biggest milestone,” Darla says.
The acquisition brings Krux into a larger global organization while allowing the team to keep doing what they do best.
“We’re still focused on the same things: our product and our customers,” she says.
Calgary continues to play a central role in that focus. With the majority of employees based locally, the company expects to keep building its presence here while expanding its reach internationally.
A moment to reflect and a message to others
Recognition at the Calgary Small Business Awards offered a chance to pause and take stock of the journey so far. For a company that operates largely outside of its home market, being acknowledged in Calgary carried added significance.
The night also included a meaningful contribution back to the community, as Krux participated in the People’s Choice Award sponsorship auction, with proceeds going to the Calgary Food Bank.
For those considering putting their name forward this year, Darla encourages a simple mindset.
“There’s no downside. You never know what could happen,” she says. “We didn’t think we’d win. And then we won! You never know – just give it a go”
